I recently attended a lecture from a professor who went down to the Inauguration of President Barack Obama. He put together a slideshow, with music, to illustrate his experience.

What I found to be the most interesting part was the discussion afterwards. Many older ladies and gentlemen talked about their experiences, some with the civil rights movement etc., and how this was the first time that they felt that they could call themselves "americans." It really struck home to realize that they meant it. They had never before felt an allegiance to this country, a reason to be an American.

One man said it very powerfully, if simply. He said, "This was the first day I could say I was proud to be an American." One of his sons texted him, he said, saying "Am I not an American now?"

So a thought to those of you out there who are skeptical... What would it be like to not feel a part of this country? What would you do?
